Departments     Mechanical engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Department was established in 1985 and this course is accredited by NBA. All kinds of industries involve energy transfer from one form to the other producing useful products required by the mankind. The above involves a clear understanding of modern materials, machines for producing components of the products, heat treatment and coatings etc. Now-a-days the design of machines and tool assumes greater importance as economical use of resources play a vital role in the cost of machineries. The automobiles and their variants provide mobility to the mankind. There is a fast development in the field of automobile sector for faster, safer and environmental friendly prime movers.
The department consists of distinguished members of faculty, which enjoys a close interaction with the students. The department has been closely monitoring the current industrial scenario and maintains close contact with several reputed organizations.
Apart from meeting the curricular requirements of the affiliated university, the department organizes programs to provide the students with industrial and practical experience through training and project work in industries so that they are able to meet the industrial requirements and face real life situations. Modern multimedia teaching technologies are used to supplement lectures and enhance the quality of teaching. Computer aided learning packages on different subjects are available for self-learning. Industrial visits are arranged for students to gain practical exposure. In addition to guest lectures and panel discussions are held with industries of repute.
A high degree of professionalism, student's chapters is inducted through the functioning of students chapters of professional associations such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and society of Mechanical Engineers. These bodies organize seminars for students on topics of current importance and global relevance to industry.
The following are the significant laboratories of this department:
Thermal Engineering Laboratory
Fluid machinery Laboratory and Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
Dynamics Laboratory
Metallurgy Laboratory
CAD/CAM Laboratory
Lathe Shop
Strength of materials laboratory
Special Machines Laboratory
Metrology Laboratory
Measurements Laboratory
Vibration Laboratory
The faculty consists of members, experienced in industry, Research and Teaching, the members of the faculty are doctorates and postgraduates in production, Design, Thermal and Energy disciplines to cater to the needs of the students of Mechanical Engineering.
Realizing the employment potential for Mechanical Engineers is more in the area of computer Aided Design and Drawing the department has developed a very well equipped Computer Aided Design Laboratory. The CAD/CAM laboratory is well equipped with more than 40 computer systems with a number of well known modeling software like IDEAS-NX series, CATIA, SOLID WORKS, IRONCAD and AUTO CAD, Finite element software like COSMOS and ANSYS are also available. For the study of forces induced on machine members due to motion, kinematics analysis packages like ADAMS, MSC-WORKING MODEL and COSMOS MOTION are available. COSMOS/M and ANSYS are used for static and dynamic analysis of components and for stress distribution. LS DYNA is available for study of metal forming behavior. FLUENT software is used for the analysis of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A number of project works are being done using these software considering real life problems from Automobile industries, Defense industries and Atomic research centers. The department also conducts special programs in CAD modeling and analysis using this software for the benefit of interested students going for beyond the curricular requirements. This greatly improves the employment potential of the students. Department also provides guidance for the students appearing for GATE or going abroad for higher studies.
Apart from the university Examinations, the department regularly conducts two unit tests and one Model examination in every semester and the students' performance is continuously evaluated. These tests improve their understanding of the subject and help them to perform better in the university examinations.
Members of the Faculty are encouraged to improve their qualifications and skills. Department also sends members of faculty to attend summer and winter schools in their field of specialization conducted by various universities. Department conducts regular seminars, at which practicing engineers deliver lectures on current engineering techniques for the benefit of students. Quiz programs are conducted to improve students' understanding of the subject. Students are given opportunity to download information on engineering trends in Mechanical Engineering by surfing the Internet and present the information at seminars in their classes. This helps them to understand the latest technology and also improves their communication skills. Students are taken on industrial visits around Chennai to see how the various engineering techniques that they have studied have been put to use. The department gives an opportunity to the students to evaluate the staff members on their performance once in every year and suitable remedial measures are taken to improve the performance of the staff.
On the whole Mechanical Engineering Department endeavors to improve the total personality of the Mechanical Engineering graduates so that they will be assets to the industry and also be good citizens doing part to the society.
